Build Your Travel Brand. Make the Responsibilities Clear.
A personal brand communicates your expertise. A DBA concerns the name under which a business operates. They are related, but neither is an independent travel agency licence.
What Is a DBA?
DBA stands for Doing Business As. It generally refers to an operating or trade name used instead of a legal name. Terminology, registration and disclosure requirements depend on the jurisdiction; there is no single nationwide process implied here.
Your personal brand is broader: your professional focus, communication and the experience clients associate with you. Deciding to use a name as a formal business name is a separate step. A logo, social profile or domain does not itself complete a registration or authorize travel sales.
Why Build Your Own Travel Brand?
An experienced advisor may want existing clients to recognize a specialty such as cruises, family travel or a particular destination. A clear brand can support an ongoing relationship rather than make every conversation start with a single booking.
Start with whom you serve, what you know and how you deliver consistently. If parts of the service depend on a host or supplier, explain that relationship. A distinctive brand should not leave clients believing that every regulated or specialist function is performed independently by one person.
DBA vs. an Independent Travel Agency
A DBA is a naming arrangement, not travel regulatory permission or automatically a new legal entity. Operating an independent travel agency can involve different registration, qualification, operating and responsibility requirements. A business name cannot substitute for those requirements.
Using a DBA does not mean you may sign every travel contract, collect all client payments or bypass local registration rules. BC, Ontario and other jurisdictions have different frameworks. Check the actual activity, applicable registration and the entity and number to be disclosed rather than treating one province’s rules as universal.
How Your Brand Works with OnTheGo
OnTheGo supports personal-brand development. DBA arrangements require approval and compliance with applicable requirements; approval is not automatic. Bring your experience, client base, product focus, proposed name and intended markets to the discussion.
Clarify the client-facing name, actual travel business, supplier registration, booking and invoice records, commission reconciliation and how the relationship appears on your website or social accounts. Supplier, training, operational and specialist support remain subject to what is actually available and agreed. A personal brand does not create a separate set of guaranteed benefits.
Responsibilities and Client Communication
Before using a name, check availability, relevant registration, brand permissions and host approval. The outcome depends on the circumstances; OnTheGo does not guarantee acceptance of every name.
Define who handles quotations, sales, contracts, bookings, payment collection and fulfilment under the applicable rules and agreement. Regulated activities must be carried out by an appropriately qualified business where required. Your own branding does not automatically transfer every permission or responsibility to you.
Clients should understand your role, the transaction entity, where payment goes and whom to contact with a problem. The use of existing client relationships and personal information also needs to be addressed; do not assume client data can simply be moved without an applicable basis.
Is a DBA Right for You?
If you have established clients, a clear specialty and the willingness to maintain accurate disclosures and operating records, branding may be a useful development discussion. If you are new, learning client needs, products and processes can come first. A DBA is not a compulsory first step in building a professional identity.
Hypothetical example: an experienced advisor wants to publish cruise content under a personal brand. A sensible sequence is to review the name and markets, establish the client-facing entity and payment path, and then launch the presentation. It is not a reason to collect money first or hide the host relationship. This illustrates a decision process, not an OnTheGo case study.
Discuss Your Brand with OnTheGo
Share your experience, proposed name, intended market and product interests. Applicable fees and complete service information are provided privately after clear collaboration interest. Branding does not automatically place you in a particular fee or commission tier.
Traditional Advisor registration is currently a waitlist, with the next intake expected in March 2027. The AI pilot has limited screened places. Neither guarantees immediate onboarding or an advisor agreement. Discussing a DBA does not change recruitment status or turn Community Host collaboration into independent travel-selling eligibility.
